Ella and I were sitting on the couch, flipping through the channels today. I happened to flip to an old college football game on ESPN Classic (I don't even know who was playing). The camera panned to the cheerleaders doing some cheer and smiling in the cheesiest fashion you can imagine. Ella then looks at me and says, "Oooooooooh Mom. I want to be one of those girls!"
Okay, being the supportive mother that I am, I said, "Well, maybe you can do that when you're older." But, I'm thinking to myself, "Please. Anything but that!" I have every right to not want my daughter to be a cheerleader, as I was one, and I know it's a dead end to nowhere. We all know that doing splits and toe-touches are not talents that will transcend time. Let's face it, after having four kids, I can no longer do half a toe-touch, nor would I want to. I started thinking, "My mom was a cheerleader, and my grandma was in the posture parade (another story for another time)." I really hope this cycle doesn't continue, because I just don't know if I can deal with two cheerleading daughters!
I would hope that my daughters would perhaps develop a musical talent (piano, violin, singing etc.) I would love for them to be in the band. (Yes, of course I was one of those snobs that made fun of the band in high school, but let's face it! Those band nerds have a talent they can use forever). Let's hope this "cheerleading" phase passes. But if not, I guess I'll be going to a lot of football games with a big, supportive, motherly grin on my face!

haha! I was a cheerleader too. Only for one year though. So far, I don't have to worry about any daughters yet! Alan keeps telling me that Heavenly Father won't ever give us more than we can handle and that's why we don't have any girls! (We'll probably have triplet girls next time we try to have a baby. :)
I think that's great that Ella wants to be a cheerleader. I don't think it's a bad thing. I was never a cheerleader in highschool, but I always thought it looked fun. -You guys supported all of the different sport groups, you got to be involved in a lot of fun events (ie. assemblies, pep rallys, 5ks, etc), and cheerleading kept you in shape. Go Ella for wanting to be like her mom, grandma, great grandma, etc.!
LOL! So funny! I too, was a cheerleader but...I don't know if my girls will want to go that direction or not. It will be funny to see what happens!
Oh dear!!! At least she wasn't saying she'd like to be "one of those" (as in, a high school girl with a boyfriend).....it could be worse.
For generations mothers have supported their children in activities they would not have chosen for them in hopes of building confidence. Worse than the cheerleading was Jazz dancing and many hours of dance competitions in skimpy sequined outfits. I wouldn't have chosen fly fishing either, but that actually turned into a skill that lead to a career. Who would have guessed? I kept pushing for piano lessons; obviously I have no credible advice on how to change this vicious cycle.
